Local favorite, The Seedlings, are about to hit the soundwaves with a new single, “Between Us.” When, you ask? Well, tomorrow. And this is only the beginning–Their debut album, Why We Grow Old  is due to hit the public in June (a specific date has not been decided yet). And if you’ve never heard of The Seedlings, please allow me the pleasure of introducing you.

This five-piece band consists of Danny Heggen (vocals, guitar), Mallory Heggen (vocals, trumpet), Ryan Stier of The River Monks (vocals, guitar, banjo, glockenspiel), Nels Dovre (cellist), and Connor Moore (drums). Known for their three-part harmonies, the band is adding multiple layers of instrumental elements including violins and an accordion partnering with the instruments mentioned above. If you’ve never had the chance to catch these musicians at The Mews or House of Bricks, make sure and catch their gig tonight on Iowa Public Radio’s Studio One for the for the 80/35 Play In Contest. The contest will be streamed live starting at 7:30 p.m. Listen live here.

Back to the song. “Between Us” is the product of the band’s growth over the past couple of years. It started out as a piece about singer Danny Heggen’s wife (not to be mistaken with bandmate Mallory Heggen, Danny’s sister), and turned into something completely new once the band got their hands on it. Danny says it best in the press release, “It’s fun to hear.” And fun it is. You can download the first release from their 10-track debut on their Bandcamp page starting tomorrow.

And this concludes your Monday morning pick-me-up. Make sure to tune in to their Studio One show tonight and download the single tomorrow–it’ll keep that pick-me-up excitement rolling.
